What is Siamese Cable?
Siamese is a term that has a few references. It is used to describe things from a type of cat to conjoined twins to a language. In the data world, siamese cable stands for a cable that is built to include both video and power. In contrast to Power over Ethernet (PoE), the power is attached to the side of the data cable. PoE makes use of wires intended for data to transfer power. Siamese cable provides separately insulated wires of power cables and coaxial cable. This allows proper power to be provided without interfering with the video transmission.
Having power and data together simplifies the installation of cable by requiring only one run. The installer does not need to tie the cables together or make two trips through the wall. To help even more, siamese cable is usually bought in a spool or a pull-box to run the cable easier. All that is left after running the cable is adding a termination on each end to provide the required data and power connections. Siamese cable lowers the time required for installation. Siamese cable is often used in Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) setups and surveillance cameras. The cable provides all requirements for the cameras without the need of finding a power source next to the install location.
Siamese cable is often offered with RG59 coaxial cable. This has become the most popular type of video for these installations. However, RG6 siamese cable can still be found. Siamese cable still follows standards and certifications that other cables do. This means that special cable is required for outdoor or plenum installations. Some people do prefer preterminated security camera cables. These still offer all the features of siamese cable, but without needing to measure, cut, or terminate cable. View Siamese patch cables below:
