Scenario: You're driving to pick up your kids from soccer practice when your cell phone rings; it's your kids' soccer coach. He says hello and starts to tell you why he called when suddenly the phone call drops. You just passed under a tunnel. You quickly attempt to call him back, but the signal where you are now is too weak.

This kind of scenario happens to millions of people everyday. A company called Wi-Ex came out with a whole line of products called zBoost to offer a solution to the problem of dropped calls and weak cell phone signal areas.

PCS vs. Cellular

When zBoost set about to create a cell phone booster, they realized that they would probably need to create different types of boosters for the different communication frequencies that are available. There are two main frequencies used by cell phone carriers these days, and those are PCS and cellular. PCS runs on the 1900 MHz frequency, while the older cellular signals run on the 800 MHz frequency. One isn't necessarily better than the other, but are just different signals.

Cingular (ATT), Verizon, and Alltel run on the cellular 800 MHz frequency while Sprint, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Cricket, and Suncom run on the PCS frequency of 1900 MHz. So, depending on which carrier you use, you might want to go with the zBoost YX500-PCS if you have a PCS phone, and the zBoost YX500-CEL if you have a cellular phone. More than one cell phone can use these boosters at a time, and some people will want a unit that can handle both PCS and Cellular phones. That's why zBoost came out with the YX510-PCS-CEL. This one is dual band, which means it works for both PCS and Cellular phones.

zBoost's Car Kit

zBoost also makes a car kit since more often than not the problems we experience with dropped calls happens while travelling. The zBoost car kit features an antenna that is magnetically mounted to the outside of the car and sends the signals back and forth to the cell phone towers and the zBoost amplifier, which can easily be hidden anywhere in the car. A small antenna on the inside of the car provides coverage for cell phones. This unit is dual band, so will work with either PCS or cell phones.
