Magic in a Box

Pros: Big fan of having extra monitors and this little box delivers with clear graphics. As an add-on hardware it was super easy to set up and no real issues for Mac user. Seems to be a little more expensive than the units at the store but Sewell makes quality products that work well.

Cons: As an add-on graphics card this product works well but there is some flickering around the edge of the open application when scrolling within an open window. This is a minor issue given what the magic box is being asked to do.

Other: Overall we are pleased with the product given it is impossible to added a second graphic card to a Mac Air. Rated at 4.5 (almost a 5).

Company response:

We're very glad you like the product, however this issue you are describing is not something we've seen before, and I wonder if we might be able to fix it. Please get in touch with our tech team if you are interested in exploring to find a solution.

Pros: The Minideck 3.0 works. I use it to run a 2nd external monitor off of my laptop. I installed the software on the included usb flash drive, then hooked the Minideck up to my usb 3.0 hub. Now I have two 24" monitors side by side and I can't tell the difference between the one hooked up through the Minideck and the one hooked up to the HDMI port on my laptop.

USB 3 connection is garbage on the board.

Pros: Before the connection to the USB 3 breaks, the device works great.

Cons: The USB 3 connection to the Mini Deck is literally soldered on with 2 little tiny specs of solder. While just plugging in the USB some of these devices snapped right off. Others broke over time (minimal movement). We've had over 6 of ours do this.

Other:

Company response:

I'm sorry for the trouble you've been having with the MiniDeck, It's odd that you've had so many brake. Could you get in contact with us and let us know more about the situation? I want to pass the information up to our product managers so we can fix what's happening. From there we can either set up a replacement or try to find an alternate solution. Support@sewelldirect.com. Pros: There is much to say for the Minideck 3.0 USB adapter. The package is smart and the magnetic stacking feature a nice touch. The video is sharp and clear. It is exceptionally easy to install.

Cons: The only complaint: I have two docking stations for my laptop, one at home and one at work. I have a Minideck 3.0 USB adapter connected to each driving a Viewsonic 23" LED display. Frequently (more often than not) when I move from one to the other the video will either not be recognized (until I unplug the USB cable and reconnect) or on one occasion the display was coarse snow which was resolved by unplugging the USB cable and reconnecting.

Other: Despite the issue above I would definitely recommend this product and will undoubtedly purchase more in the future.

Good concept, Poor Design since the 3.0 cable

Pros: Display adapter easily adds extra monitors for a reasonable cost. Works well 99% of the time.

Cons: Fragile Cable design with thick heavy 3.0 USB cables, have had 3 boxes that the usb 3.0 cable mount has pulled away from the board rendering the $100 box useless. Did not have this with the older usb 2.0 devices. Should use a more flexible cable or make a surround to hold the cable from bending.

Other:

Company response:

We're sorry to hear you've had such a frustrating experience with these adapters. Hopefully you received prompt replacements on those broken units. Please let us know if there's anything we can do for you.

Great for multi-monitor configurations

Pros: Great for expanding your desktop to multiple monitors.

Cons: Connector is very delicate - I've had 2 break and there is no repair option. The cables that come with the units are hefty which is nice, but I think this contributed to the breakage.

Other: I have a PC with 6 monitors - two come from the internal NVidia card and the other 4 are driven by the MiniDecks. For casual use, including full-screen YouTube videos there is no latency and no noticeable CPU drain on the host PC. The magnet mounts are a very nice touch, but the magnets aren't strong enough especially given the extra weight from the cables.
