Overview

This amazing feat of technical wizardry is accomplished in two locations: the cable heads and the cable itself.

In the cable head, there is a normal HDMI connector that plugs into your HDMI device. That HDMI signal is then processed into light by the built-in converter and sent out to the other cable head. The other cable head receives this signal and converts it back to HDMI. It then is sent through the normal HDMI connector to your display.

Inside the cable itself, there are two cables: a fiber cable and copper cable. The copper cable is used for hot plug detection (so the source and display devices know when both ends are plugged in) and not used for any data transmission. The fiber cable is essentially that, a bundle of fibers that transmit light. The light travels down these fibers using internal reflection, which allows the light to bounce off the cable walls similar to a bobsled. Light travels extremely fast (186,000 miles a second) so the signal can travel incredible distances and not lose any quality.

Goes The Distance

The Light-Link is a simple and reliable HDMI cable that can go the distance, no matter the situation. Using fiber technology this HDMI cable is able to send high quality HDMI signals over long distances without any need for repeaters. Normal copper HDMI cables have a physical distance limitation. The Light-Link however, uses light as it's main transmission medium and therefore can extend far past the limitation of copper HDMI cables. The speed and quality of the HDMI signal is perfectly maintained with no extra power supply needed.

According to HDMI.org "The longest HDMI cable runs seen to date have been achieved using fiber-optic cable, which is far less susceptible to attenuation and interference than copper. Electrically it is similar to an active cable or Cat 5/6 solution, the principal difference being the higher-quality optical cabling between the transmit and receive connectors. HDMI over fiber is a highly robust solution, effective in cable runs up to 100 meters or more."

Mobile and Versatile

Light is the core theme of this cable. The inner fiber is made from flexible materials so you do not have to worry about bending or breaking. The inner fiber also has a small gauge, meaning that this cable will be thin and easy to hide. Measuring at 60 meters (about 200 feet), this cable is long enough to transmit a signal across the wingspan of a 747!

The technology to convert the HDMI signal to light and back is housed in the heads of this cable, eliminating the need for any repeaters. This also means that there is no extra power required and no adapters are necessary. The technology is advanced but the way you use it is simple, just like the HDMI cable you are already accustomed to. One difference however is the Light-Link is "directional" meaning there is a source side and display side.

Since the Light-Link doesn't have to be plugged into a wall outlet, that makes it a good solution for applications that do not have a power source conveniently close by. This makes the Light-Link an excellent choice over any extension solution that needs to be plugged in.

Easy to Use

Another factor that makes this cable shine above the rest is eliminating possible points of failure. In a typical balun setup you have four HDMI connections (source to sender and receiver to display), two RJ45 connections (possibly terminated by hand), and two power connections from the baluns to the wall.

That is eight things that can come unplugged, plugged in the wrong way, corroded over time or just need to be stuffed somewhere out of sight. With the Light-Link, you have two plugs on a system that has already been tested and can be easily verified end to end. Troubleshooting is incredibly easy compared to any other setup.

Pros: Works for long distances. Price (cheaper by the foot to buy 330ft than 150ft) Shipped fast.

Cons: Thin cable

Other: I would have liked for the cable to be thicker to help avoid kinking the cable. During installation there a couple times I was worried. Other than that, worked perfect. Instant reading on projector. I have bought two 330ft fiber hdmi cables and will be buying two more soon

Works just like a 10' cable over 330'!

Pros: I was surprised how lightweight the cable seemed - I think it's actually lighter than a normal 100' cable even though it's more than 3X's longer because it uses fiber optics.

Cons: I researched the technology before using it so I knew not to let the cable get tied up in a knot (it can mess with the signal), but was surprised it didn't include a warning about it in the package.

Other: Be sure to pay attention to which side is the source and which is the display. At first I thought it was DOA until I realized that unlike a normal HDMI cable it has to be installed in the right direction. (Similar to a redmere cable)
