Overview

The Light-Link is an "HDMI over Fiber" cable that sends the video information through optical fiber. Because it uses fiber, it can send the signal instantly with no perceptible latency at longer distances than regular copper HDMI cables.

How it Works

The converters inside the cable heads convert incoming electrical signal into optical on one end, and back into electrical on the other end. The Light-Link is composed of fiber cables and copper cables. The copper cables are used for non-video information such as hot plug detection, grounding, and +5v power. The fiber strands carry all the video information.

The light travels down the fibers using internal reflection, which allows the light to bounce off the cable walls similar to a bobsled. Light travels extremely fast (186,000 miles a second) so the signal arrives almost instantly without losing any quality.

Better than copper

According to HDMI.org "The longest HDMI cable runs seen to date have been achieved using fiber-optic cable, which is far less susceptible to attenuation and interference than copper. Electrically it is similar to an active cable or Cat 5/6 solution, the principal difference being the higher-quality optical cabling between the transmit and receive connectors. HDMI over fiber is a highly robust solution, effective in cable runs up to 100 meters or more."

Easier than any HDMI extender

Since the optical converters are housed inside the heads of the cable, there is no need for any external repeaters. This also means that there is no need for extra power adapters or patch cables.

The Light-Link eliminates possible points of failure. In a typical HDMI extender setup with baluns you have a total of eight connections:

  • x4 HDMI connections - video source to sender balun and receiver balun to display.
  • x2 RJ45 connections - transmitter balun to receiver balun.
  • x2 power connections - from baluns to power outlets.

That's eight possible things that can get unplugged, plugged in the wrong way, or become defective. With the Light-Link you only have one cable that can be easily verified end to end. Troubleshooting is incredibly easy compared to any other setup.

Worth the Price!

Pros: Before this hybrid HDMI I was using a high definition wireless link from my A/V receiver to my 4K television. Sewell's light-link provides a seamless connection between my 4K television and the A/V receiver -- the Audio Return Channel (ARC) function is flawless! Now my A/V receiver recognizes the advanced 4K functions and the picture is so much better... even the sound is deeper and richer. Not sure how the ARC handshake improves the surround sound capabilities, but the difference is positively noticeable. Thank you for developing this truly high quality connection. Light-Link is "the" solution for long distance HDMI cable connections.

Cons: None

Other: If you're shopping around and think a conventional HDMI cable with a repeater is the cheaper and better way to go, just think you get what you pay for. . . cheap application equals cheap results. Spring for the all-in-one Light-Link HDMI and you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Removable heads made it easier to pass through conduit to route it up through my attic. Xbox now recognizes 4K from TV!

Cons: The monitor end has a mico USB connection labeled "power" and came with a USB cord my no documentation or instructions.

Other: I had a 40' HDMI cable that had the special chips ("red" something...) to allow 4K over longer distances. Hooking Xbox to TV but xbox wouldn't recognized TV as 4K compliant. Replaced it with this fiberoptic and now the Xbox automatically recognized and set up for 4K. When I ordered I posted a question about the "power" connection (is that to power something else? Do you need a USB power input to run the fiberoptics?) but that question never got posted on the site or answered. I would up pluggin the USB into an outlet and then into the cable and all seems to be working fine, but some sort of directions would be helpful....

I'm using the 40' to run to a projector. It works with no sync issues, handshake issues, or dropouts. Awesome.

UHD HDR Signal on Samsung 4K UHD Television, finally!

DoubleJ - 3/4/2019 9:19:08 AM

- Actually worked and transferred UHD color signal on a 40 ft run to my Samsung UN65KS8000 which other purchased cables were unable to do that claimed they could (Forspark, iBird). The other cables would only transfer 4K resolution but UHD color would not work. Sewell cables worked on the first try! - Thinner cables that don't take up as much space when connecting multiple devices - Superb picture quality

Amazing Product... Highly Recommended!!!

Dave S. - 1/24/2019 2:33:25 PM

What an amazing product. I was really frustrated when I learned of the 6' 4K limit on the Display Port connection. My 4K monitors are across the room and a 6' cable would do nothing for me. I looked at several websites for solutions and the cheapest cable that I could find was over $250 to carry the signal to the other side of the room. Since I had five connections to make, this was going to cost $1,400 with tax and shipping. Then I discovered the Sewell Direct website. The Light-Link 40' HDMI cable was the perfect solution at a very reasonable cost. It works perfectly and the 4K pictures and videos at 60hz are spectacular. I highly recommend these cables and the Sewell Direct company. The product is superb and the customer service has been stellar!
