Pros: This kit included these tools and a box of cat5 cable 1000' is the best deal going really i checked around and nothing beats this deal. SEWELL you did it again, thanks.

Cons: The only thing about this set is the cable tester feels and looks cheap but it works great. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Great basic set--with a little help

Pros: I'm not an installer by trade, so I don't terminate cables very often, just in general IT and construction projects. But I guess I do it enough to wear out my first set of cheap tools. My cheapo ebay cable tester started showing opens on pins 3 and 4. (I did an embarrassing amount of running back and forth/cussing before I realized the problem was my tester) So that got me shopping around. My old crimper has only set 7/8 teeth for years, so I always have to flip the head around and crimp it a second time to get that last pin. ...and I was almost out of cat5 RJ45s... so this kit started to look like a really good deal. What I like: The tester is pretty basic. Nothing fancy, but it is better in essentially every way from my old tester, so I'm pretty satisfied. The on/off/slow switch is easy to use and seats nicely into each position (not so with the old) The one RJ45 (8P8C) jack will test both ethernet and phone lines (my old tester had separate 6P6C testers for phone wires, and you you had to test phones using that, which would be fine, but I've made phone connections going from RJ45 to RJ11 and I had to build a little nest of couplers and leads to test it right). It's even less ugly than my old tester. (though, it isn't going to win any design awards or anything) The crimper is sturdy. The grips are a textured plastic, not rubbery, and there is a retainer clip so they can't pull off. Reasonably comfortable to squeeze. And the crimping die on them has a slider so it stays perpendicular, which I think means it won't ever get the 7of8 problem my old crimpers have. Nice.

Cons: I had two complaints, but both were easily solved. (See pictures) The lights on the tester are super bright. Which is good mostly, but the red "power" LED that blinks with all the test signals was too bright. Like, a little blinding, and the light bled into the spots next to it. I opened it up and used a sharpie to blacken the LED (between the column of two and the column of 8--hard to see cause it's black now). It's way better now. The light coming through has a weird, uh, scribbly? pattern. But the brightness is just right. My second complaint was that the crimper didn't have anything to keep it closed while unused (they spring open). It's not a big problem, but I keep them in a smallish bag, so I used some screws and string so I can keep them closed. 5 minutes of work and now I'm very happy with them.

Other: I haven't used the coax tester, couldn't speak to that. I haven't crimped RJ11/RJ12 with them yet, and I don't use the cable cutter/stripper on the crimp tool... (I don't know how you are supposed to without nicking the wires) I use electrician's scissors for cutting and stripping. Oh, and the RJ45 heads are great, no complaints there, but the ziplock bag they come in is super cheap. It's already torn and splitting, but I usually don't haul around the whole bag with me anyway, so that's not a problem for me. If you are making cables every day, I'm sure there are much nicer things. But for occasional use, or a DIYer, (or just to keep as a backup/loaner set) they are perfectly serviceable. For me, they're an upgrade.

This is a great starter kit. I like to make my own cables (RG 45) and give a hand to other good folks. Perfect..
