Operating system requirements

FastLynx 3.3 supports USB transfer on Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP.

Windows 95 OSR 2.1 includes USB support, but FastLynx does not support USB transfer on that platform.
In the article USB Support on Windows 98, Microsoft refers to USB support in Windows 95 as "immature". Based on the information in that article, we recommend that Windows 95 users who wish to use FastLynx for USB transfers upgrade to Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP

No USB bridge cable detected

If you are transferring files with the FastLynx USB bridge cable and you get "No USB bridge cable detected", Windows may not have loaded the driver properly. Follow these steps to install the driver (steps may vary slightly depending upon operating system):
  1. Click on the "Start" button at the lower left corner of your display. Then click on Control Panel. Double-click on the System icon and select the Hardware tab. Click on Device manager. If the USB bridge cable is plugged in, you should find one of the following: "Unknown device" under Other, "Unknown USB device" under Universal Serial Bus Controllers or "USB device" under FastLynx (either of these should show up with an exclamation point).
  2. Right click on the unknown device and select Update driver. This should bring up the "Hardware Update Wizard".
  3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click "Next".
  4. Select "Search for the best drivers in these locations". Uncheck "Search removable media" and check "Include this location in the search". Click on browse and select the FastLynx folder under Program Files in the Local Disk. Click "OK" then click "Next".
  5. The wizard will then search for and install the driver. Click "Finish". FastLynx should now say "Listening on USB bridge cable" or "Connecting on USB bridge cable".

Windows XP Installation of FastLynx 3.2

If you are installing a previous version of FastLynx, particularly version 3.2, you may experience the following: when you install FastLynx and select the checkbox to install the USB driver on Windows XP, you will see the following message from Windows: "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP". This message means that we have not had Microsoft test our USB driver and certify it as Windows Logo compliant. We have tested the driver on XP ourselves, however, and have many users using it on XP. You can safely click "Continue Anyway". Our driver will NOT destabilize your system.

Unfortunately, Windows XP includes a USB driver that recognizes our FastLynx USB Bridge Cable, but is not compatible with the FastLynx software. We are working on a solution to make installation of the FastLynx USB driver on XP easier, but for now the following procedure must be followed:

  1. Install the FastLynx software before plugging in the FastLynx USB bridge cable. When the appropriate installation screen appears, be sure to check the box indicating that the USB driver should be installed. Ignore the message above about Windows Logo compatibility and install the driver anyway.
  2. Plug the FastLynx USB bridge cable into a USB port on your computer.
  3. Whenever you see a message "Welcome to the Install Shield Wizard for PC-Linq", press the Cancel button and then confirm that you do not want to install the PC-Linq driver by pressing the "Yes" button when asked. You may have to do this several times.
  4. Click on the "start" button at the lower left corner of your display. Then right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". This brings up a dialog titled "Computer Management". Select "Device Manager" in the list of items on the left. Then on the right, find the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" entry. Click on the "+" sign next to it to open it up.
  5. If you see "FastLynx USB Bridge Cable" in the list, the FastLynx driver is already installed and you are finished. Instead, you will probably see an entry called "USB Bridge Cable". Right-click on this entry, and select "Update Driver".
  6. This brings you to a screen titled "Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard". Change the default selection to the one that says "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)". Then press Next.
  7. This brings you to a screen titled "Please choose your search and installation options". Change the default selection to "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install." Then press Next.
  8. You should see "FastLynx USB Bridge Cable" listed in the compatible driver list. Select that driver and press Next. Ignore the warning about the driver not being digitally signed on this screen. Then ignore the message about the driver not having passed Windows Logo testing and press "Continue Anyway".
  9. You should see a message indicating that the wizard has finished installing the software for "FastLynx USB Bridge Cable". Press Finish.

The installation is complete at this point and FastLynx should be able to recognize and use the FastLynx USB bridge cable.

USB controllers

In accordance with USB guidelines, the FastLynx USB device driver does not communicate directly with the USB hardware. It relies on a Host Controller driver to perform low-level functions such as reliably delivering a packet of data. We found in our testing that some USB controllers are more reliable than others for the kind of fast bulk transfers that FastLynx performs. You can tell what kind of USB controller your system has by going to Device Manager and opening the entry for "Universal Serial Bus controllers". We have had users report dropped connections, and even system hangs, when using FastLynx with the following USB controllers:

  • AMD 756
  • VIA 3038
  • SiS 7001

These problems usually occur during a very long transfer session. If you experience these types of problems using FastLynx for USB transfer, please email us at support@sewelldirect.com and let us know the name of your USB controller so we can update our list of problem controllers.

Link Integrity Test

We highly recommend running the Link Integrity test for 24 hours or more on your USB connection if possible. We have had a small number of users who have discovered that their computers had bad memory chips that way. We know of two cases where the Link Integrity test reported failures, but conventional memory diagnostics claimed that the computer memory was good. In one case, we wrote our own memory test that proved that the memory chips were bad - even though the chips had passed a test from memory diagnostic software purchased at a computer store. In both of these cases, replacing the memory chips in the computer caused the Link Integrity errors to go away. WARNING: using FastLynx, or any other software, on a system with bad memory chips can cause data files to get corrupted.
