FastLynx 2 - Using FX.EXE

FastLynx Erroneously Claims Not Enough Space to Transfer a File

If you are running FastLynx 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0, and experience this problem, upgrade to FastLynx version 2.01. Under Windows 95/98, FAT32 drive volumes can now be larger than 2 GB. This was not possible under earlier version of Windows or DOS. FastLynx 2.01 contains updated code to recognize these larger drive volumes.

Problems Running under Windows NT, 2000, or XP

Please upgrade to version 3.3 if you want to run on NT 4, 2000, or XP.

No Connection in Split Screen Mode

  • Change the port list (by selecting Configuration from the Main Menu) so that it lists only the port you are actually using. The default value scans all ports, which can sometimes cause problems. For example, if you are using a parallel connection on LPT1, replace the "COM*,LPT*,IPX" default value with "LPT1".
  • Ensure a proper cable is being used. Serial cables should be null-modem. Parallel cables must be FastLynx, Fastwire, LapLink, or Interlnk compatible. A printer cable will not work.
  • Ensure the cable is securely connected at both ends to the proper ports on each computer.
  • Ensure the other computer is running fx.exe and is at the Main Menu (FastLynx will not connect if both computers try to enter split-screen mode simultaneously).
  • If using parallel transfer, insure that a Windows 95 printer driver is not interfering with FastLynx operation. If your driver has an option to check printer status, set this option to "No Status" so that it does not periodically write to the printer port.
  • Try using a different port or cable if possible.

Timeouts During Transfer Session

  • If using parallel transfer, insure that a Windows 95 printer driver is not interfering with FastLynx operation. If your driver has an option to check printer status, set this option to "No Status" so that it does not periodically write to the printer port.
  • Try a smaller Maximum Block Size (Configuration from Main Menu)
  • If using serial transfer, set Serial Transfer Method to "Force safe transfer method" (Configuration)
  • Disable accelerated parallel or serial mode (Configuration)
  • For serial transfer, try a lower Maximum Baud Rate (Configuration)
  • The above suggestions all reduce transfer speeds, so experiment to see which combination gives you the fastest reliable transfers.
  • If running under Windows, try with and without the VxD installed.
  • If running under Windows, try exiting to DOS first (or "MS-DOS mode" in Windows 95)

FastLynx - Using FXSVR.EXE and FXLINK.EXE

Only run FXSVR.EXE under DOS

Do not attempt to run FXSVR.EXE from a DOS session under Windows. Boot DOS first and then run FXSVR.EXE.

FXSVR.EXE and FXLINK.EXE are meant for technically advanced users. Do not try to use them unless you are experienced at installing and configuring device drivers.
