Will this device work for both Macs and Windows-based computer. For example, if the windows-based computer is networked to the modem via the lan,can a Mac access the internet via this device?

If all the Mac is trying to do is connect to the wireless signal then yes it should work fine. All wireless modems use the IEEE 802.11 standard which means that all wireless cards (used in a Windows machine or an Apple machine) can connect to that wireless signal.
