I need a serial input on my new Dell XPS 1330 with Vista, I tried an adapter cable from Radio Shack. It worked with some inputs but not the diagnostic programs I need it for. Some guy at Best Buty told me that there are different adapters (USB - Serial)Can you recommend something for me??

Chipsets will be important to you. You should find out what chipset the one that didn't work was. We have usb to serial adapters with prolifec or FTDI chipsets.
