I have a Dell 2400 abt 5 yrs old. I have a Vizio 37" HDTV. The cable distance is about 45' between the two. Would the pix quality on the TV be equal to the pix off the air or dish? And would the 50' cable degrade the quality?

Most Vizio HDTVs have VGA inputs (sometimes called an RGB connection, it has 3 rows of 5 holes on a single connection) which you could use to connect your computer without any converters. You would just need a long VGA cable to connect the two. VGA shouldn't have any trouble running 50'. You could use our SVGA Monitor Cable, 50 Ft, part SW-2403-50. If your TV does not have a VGA, you could use this converter box and a long component video cable. Component also shouldn't have any problems going 50 feet.
