Customer Question

I have an HDTV with component video but NOT HDMI inputs. I want to use the HDMI video outpt of a PS3 (I want the upscaling that only comes out of the hdmi port). Could I use a SW-6181 to convert the HDMI to DVI and then the SW-4041 to convert the DVI to component (I know sound would not be converted or carried. I do not care about audio)? If so, am I correct that the HDMI to DVI conversion would be lossless, and the DVI to Component would be nearly so?

Sewell Direct Answer

That will not work at all. You would be trying to run a digital signal into analog ports on your TV. Even before running into that problem the SW-6181 only has the pins for a digital signal while the SW-4041 needs the signal to come over the analog pins so there will not be any signal going between those two parts.

HDMI is protected by something called HDCP. HDCP is specifically built to prevent you from converting an HDMI or DVI signal that is protected by HDCP into component. It is actually illegal to sell anything within the U.S. that would allow you to convert the HDMI signal from the PS3 to a component signal.
