What's New With HDMI 1.3?
HDMI v1.3 came out in 2006, but is finally finding its way into real life products, such as HDMI 1.3 cables, switches, splitters, and displays that support all of the new features. In order to enjoy the new innovations in HDMI 1.3, of course you're going to have to throw out all of your old connectivity products in order to substitute for new ones. So the question becomes: is it worth it?
I guess that's a question you'll have to answer for yourself when you see what's new:
- Overall Bandwidth (for single link) is now 10.2 Gbit/s. If you're buying HDMI 1.3 cables, make sure you get Category 2, which transfers at 340 MHz
- HDMI v1.3 also supports Deep Color (optionally where available). Deep color is a method of showing a graphical image using an extremely large number of shades, hues, and luminosities. Deep Color can support up to 48-bit color, which allows for 281.5 trillion colors.
- HDMI 1.3 allows for high definition sound, optionally supporting either Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, which are lossless audio codecs that are used in Blu-ray Discs and other content.
- Automatic audio/video sync is incorporated.
