Perhaps the world's most advanced light bulb, the EarthLED Evolux S LED Bulb and other LED lights like it are quickly advancing to the point where they might save the planet and also save all of us some serious money in the long-term. But why is this bulb getting a lot of hype while LED home lighting light bulbs have been around for years?

E27 Bulbs

First, let's brush up on terminology. The most common light base connector is called the Edison base, or E27. It is the screw-in base most common in North American home light fixtures today. Evolux S LED bulbs use this base, but there are other common bases such as the MR16. This is a two prong connection common for applications like lawn lighting or track lighting.

LED vs. CFL and Incandescent Lighting

Although all of these lights can use the same E27 base, they differ greatly in lighting technology. Incandescent lights, the least efficient of them all (but also most common) use electricity running through a filament to produce light. CFL lights, or Compact Flourescent Lights, use phosphor chemical reactions to produce light and saves in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions over incandescent lights, but are difficult to dispose of because they also contain mercury. LED lights consume less energy than both CFL and Incandescent lights and can be disposed of safely or recycled. This of course is almost a non-issue considering the life-span of most LED lights lasting an average of around 50,000 hours.

Brightness

LED light vs CFL vs incandescent

The challenge with LED lighting is to acheive the same performance levels as its CFL and incandescent competition while still consuming a fraction of the energy and producing almost no heat. Evolux's advanced heat sink system coupled with using the latest and greatest in LED Light chips allows them to compete fully with typical 100 W incandescent lights while only using 13 W. As you can see in the comparison, The 13 W LED light on the far left out-brightens the CFL light (which generally causes things to look a little ashy and harsh as well) and matches the 100 W incandescent light in brightness.

Long Lasting

The Evolux bulbs are guaranteed to shine for at least 50,000 hours which means you can use and abuse them, turning them on and off for over 10 years. This justifies the increased cost of the bulb, if not for the hundreds of dollars you'll save on your energy bill every year. Both incandescent and CFL bulbs don't come close.
