  • I have a sony vaio connected to my HDTV using a DVI to HDMI connection, but, I want to use the HDMI connection for a new blu-ray dvd player. Therefore, I need to connect my sony using component cables. I have a Nvidia GeForce FX5200 adapter and have seen many issues trying to connect this up. I have seen S-Video to component cables (maybe one came with my sony, but if so long gone now). Do you have an appropriate adapter for either VGA, S-Video, or HDMI that will work with the Nvidia GeForce?
    • There are a few things to consider here: The first thing you should check is the s-video port on your sony. It should be a 7 or 9 pin. If it is 7, it likely supports component, if 9, it definitely supports component. All you need at that point is the cable. Most video cards do not support VGA to component or DVI to component unless the video card specifically states that it does. If it turns out that your video card does not natively support component outputs through the s-video, vga or DVI connector, you will need to buy a conversion box, found here

  • Both my PC's video card outputs (it supports 2 monitors) are DVI. One is already connected via a DVI cable to a Dell flat panel. All the HDMI connectors on my new Panasonic plasma TV are used, by I've got an available set of component connectors. Shouldn't this cable work fine connecting my PC to my TV?
    • The only time this cable conversion will work is when your video card specifically supports component through the DVI port. Many video cards do not support component at all, or they support it through a port that looks like s-video. The technical explanation is that component is taken from the analog portion of DVI, which natively is RGBHV. That means that the colors each have their own pin as do vertical and horizontal sync, totaling 5 pins. Component, being three pins, puts the sync information on the same pin as the color green. If your source(video card) does not know to output the sync information along with the green signal, no simple cable adapter will work and you will need a conversion box.

  • Can this cable be used to convert HDMI video output from a DVD player/Reciever to dvi to component input to a Anolog TV with component connection?
    • HDMI is an interface that only supports digital signals, while component is an analog type signal. These cables do not perform any sort of conversion and will not adapt the digital HDMI signal to an analog Component signal. Unfortunately, that is only the first problem you'll run into. HDMI is protected by a system called HDCP. HDCP is a copy protection mechanism that is intentionally designed to prevent you from converting an HDMI signal, from a DVD player or other device, into component. If you were to attempt to do so, the HDCP system would detect that it is not running into a digital HDCP compliant port on your TV and it would stop outputting video.

  • I am looking to use this cable to connect my nintendo wii and my samsung syncmaster 226 BW which sends both a dvi and a vga signal. I wish to use the dvi from the back of my monitor directly to the wii.. will this work?
    • While this cable changes the connections, it does not convert the signal. Unfortunately, LCD monitors are not built to accept a component signal through the DVI port so the monitor would not be able to handle that signal. In fact, most LCD monitors have a DVI-D type connection, while these cables require a DVI-A or DVI-I connection to work, so most likely the cable wouldn't even be able to physically plug into your monitor. I would suggest using a cable that is built to convert the wii output to a VGA signal. You could use our Wii and PS3 to VGA Cable, SW-9003.

  • I want to go from my Proxima desktop 2300 projector, that only has a 2 row 25 pin female hookup in the back that says(computer), to a dvd player to show movies on a big screen. Will this work?
    • Somtimes this cable will work with projectors, but you need to check with Proxima and find out if your projector will support a component signal through DVI.
