A single card:
Because of the size of the ports used, they can't all fit onto a single back plate. While only a single PCI Express slot is used, two back plates are used for easy access to both serial and parallel ports.

Many new computers leave out parallel and serial ports but these technologies remain relevant and are still used in printers and other POS devices.
